Abstract

This study, entitled “Syntactic States in the Work of Abu Hayyan al-Gharnati in Al-Bahr al-Muhit (Hearing and Analogy as a Model)”, presents a descriptive, analytical, and comparative examination of the methodology of the Andalusian scholar Abu Hayyan al-Gharnati (654–745 AH) in employing the two foundational principles of hearing (al-samā‘) and analogy (al-qiyās) in his treatment of syntactic structures within his encyclopedic exegesis Al-Bahr al-Muhit.The study aims to uncover how Abu Hayyan handled these two principles and to identify the methodological criteria that governed his preference for certain grammatical opinions or his rejection of others. The research adopts three integrated approaches: a descriptive-analytical method to clarify syntactic patterns, an inductive method to trace evidence and instances of hearing and analogy, and a comparative method to examine Abu Hayyan’s views alongside those of his contemporaries, such as al-Zamakhshari and others.The study concludes with several key findings, most notably: Abu Hayyan consistently prioritizes transmitted linguistic evidence (hearing) over analogy; his regarding the rejection of using Prophetic Hadith as grammatical evidence is methodological and based on concerns about the accuracy of wording transmission rather than diminishing the value of the Sunnah; Al-Bahr al-Muhit represents an integrated grammatical framework embedded within a tafsir structure rather than merely a marginal grammatical commentary; and his scholarly influence continues to be relevant in contemporary linguistic studies.
