Abstract

Southern Iraq, particularly Maysan Governorate and its marshes (which are listed as a World Heritage Site), is witnessing growing interest in exploring ways to develop and invest in its tourism potential. This study aims to provide a comprehensive spatial analysis of the region's natural and human tourism resources, identifying obstacles and limitations to its development. The research employs two methodologies: descriptive and analytical. It identifies and analyzes the most prominent geographical features contributing to tourism in the study area, as well as the obstacles it faces, in order to arrive at solutions and proposals that contribute to the development of this sector. The research is divided into three sections, followed by conclusions, recommendations, and footnotes. The study concludes with these findings. The study arrives at several conclusions, most notably the existence of a spatial gap and contradiction between the province's diverse tourism potential and its current state of underdevelopment. Climate change and water policies are among the biggest obstacles, as they lead to fluctuating water levels in the marshes. The study recommends activating joint efforts between the public and private sectors to develop a comprehensive strategic development plan that addresses the region's needs for services and ensures water allocations to preserve tourism in Maysan, particularly in the marshlands.
