Abstract

The Jurisprudence and Secrets of the BasmalahThis research provides a comprehensive study of the "Basmalah" (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), analyzing its linguistic roots, theological implications, and legal rulings.Linguistically, the study explains that "Bismillah" begins with a prepositional "Ba," implying an action like "I begin" or "I read." It notes a unique orthographic feature: the "Alif" in "Ism" (name) is omitted for brevity due to frequent use, while the "Ba" is elongated as a mark of veneration. The research delves into the etymology of "Allah," "Ar-Rahman," and "Ar-Rahim," distinguishing between the general mercy of Ar-Rahman (encompassing all creation) and the specific mercy of Ar-Rahim (reserved for believers). From a jurisprudential perspective, the research addresses the long-standing scholarly debate over whether the Basmalah is an integral verse of Surah Al-Fatiha. This leads to a detailed exploration of the rulings on reciting it during prayer, contrasting the views of various schools of thought—from those who mandate its audible recitation to those who prefer it silent or omit it in specific contexts.Furthermore, the paper highlights the spiritual significance of the Basmalah, describing it as the "Key to all Scriptures." It explores its protective virtues, its presence as a double blessing in Surah An-Naml, and the profound reasons for its absence in Surah At-Tawbah, citing both historical narrations and thematic reasons related to the nature of that Surah. Ultimately, the research portrays the Basmalah not just as a formulaic opening, but as a foundational pillar of Islamic faith and practice.**
