Abstract

This study investigates violations of the Cooperative Principle in the dialogue between Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) and his people in light of Paul Grice’s theory. It examines the implicatures conveyed by the speaker through violating one or more of the maxims constituting the Cooperative Principle. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, focusing on identifying the implicit meanings intended by the speaker. The study first demonstrates that there are linguistic indicators in the addressee’s speech that reveal his recognition and comprehension of the implied meaning. These indicators correspond with other linguistic cues in the speaker’s discourse, which play an active role in conveying the intended meaning to the addressee and enabling him to infer the implicature. The analysis shows that violations occur across all four of Grice’s conversational maxims: Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner. The findings further demonstrate that these violations do not constitute a disruption of communication; rather, they perform deliberate pragmatic functions and contribute to generating multiple implicatures. They also reveal the argumentative and psychological stances of the interlocutors and highlight the ways in which the people of Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) responded to his discourse. Furthermore, the analysis shows that the interpretation of implicatures does not depend solely on linguistic structure; rather, it emerges through the interaction between linguistic form, contextual factors, speakers’ communicative intentions, and the contextual cues accompanying the discourse. This confirms the effectiveness of the pragmatic approach in revealing the semantic and argumentative dimensions of Qur’anic dialogue.
